On Kawara developed a uniquely nuanced artistic language over more than six decades. His systematic documentation of existence, begun long before our era of digital sharing, uses the tools of his time – postcards, telegrams, calendars and CDs – to mark his presence.

On Kawara: Rules of Freedom, Freedom of Rules presents the artist's most iconic series, spanning five decades of work and marking the first institutional solo presentation of his work in the world conceived since his passing 10 years ago. Through distinct systematic approaches epitomised by his renowned Date Paintings, these works fundamentally reshape our understanding of time and existence.

An array of programmes will be featured in the ‘Chinese Culture Festival 2025’, including the opening dance performance Dongpo: Life in Poems, the ‘Chinese Opera Festival’, exemplary local arts projects recognised by the China National Arts Fund, performing arts programmes from arts and cultural organisations, as well as film screenings, exhibitions and talks.

The first major Islamic art exhibition in Hong Kong, showcases around 100 masterpieces, including the finest carpets from Iran, Turkey and India, along with ceramics, metalwork, manuscripts and jade. The exhibits are primarily from the Museum of Islamic Art, along with precious objects from the collections of the Palace Museum and the Hong Kong Palace Museum. As early as the Tang and Song dynasties, the Islamic world had contact with China through land and sea routes. Chinese motifs often appear in Islamic art of the period, as seen in the carpets and objects made from diverse materials displayed in the exhibition.

This exhibition presents the complexity of twentieth-century Cantonese art and visual culture as an important chapter in global modernism. Sharing a linguistic and cultural identity, the southern port cities of Guangzhou and Hong Kong have historically been marginal in China. As the birthplace of revolution, these cities fostered a distinctive visual and artistic modernism shaped by cross-cultural interactions and the tensions between conservative and progressive art worlds. Bringing together over 200 works from institutional and private collections, many on public display for the first time, Canton Modern recovers a deeply rooted local story with contemporary global resonance.

From July 2025, the new season of the Tea House Theatre Experience offers a brand-new selection of songs, instrumental musical pieces and performance excerpts.

Presented by Tea House Rising Stars Troupe and curated and directed by legendary Cantonese opera artist Law Ka-ying, the Tea House Theatre Experience is designed to introduce new audiences to Cantonese opera.

The 90-minute showcase selection of songs, instrumental musical pieces and performance excerpts, demonstrates various traditional styles through a varying programme of works exploring tales of romance, comedy, tragedy and martial arts. The experience also includes narration by an expert moderator offering insight into the history of the art form.

The International Arts Carnival (IAC) returns to bring a summer filled with creativity, inspiration and unforgettable moments! This year's carnival features a vibrant lineup of performances and activities by world-renowned international and local artists, ensuring there's something for everyone in the family.

Highlights include the breathtaking 'Soul of Shaolin' by the Henan Provincial Shaolin Wushu Center; 'Sounds of Sports', where Phoebus Chan and his fellow musicians fuse music with homegrown sports heroes in an energetic performance; and the musical 'The Secret Agent Spin-off: Hidden Treasure,' adapted from the bestselling novel series.

In addition to exhibitions, workshops, online programmes and more, IAC offers an outreach programme at Domain in Yau Tong, showcasing excerpts from some of the carnival's most exciting shows. Get ready for an exciting summer bursting with art and imagination!

WestK Cabaret Nights is a brand-new series featuring interdisciplinary performances that blend music and theatre to showcase the vibrant spirit of Hong Kong’s multicultural cabaret scene. Curated by the WestK Performing Arts Division, WestK Cabaret Nights will be presented in the intimate venue of the Tea House Theatre at the Xiqu Centre on two to three weekday evenings, featuring a dynamic programme that combines various forms of live entertainment, spanning from music of different genres and music theatre to storytelling and stand-up comedy from both experienced and emerging artists.

Chang’e-6 successfully returned to Earth with soil samples from the far side of the Moon on 25 June 2024. This exhibition is the first of its kind to showcase Chinese advancements in aerospace, aviation, and marine navigation. It demonstrates the China’s remarkable accomplishments in space, aviation and maritime fields, alongside the latest achievements of the Chang’e lunar exploration programme, including lunar samples collected by Chang’e-6, Chang’e-5 and Chang’e-6’s return capsule and parachute .

Visitors are invited to explore such technological breakthroughs and visionary achievements through a diverse array of artefacts, models, photographs, videos, interactive displays and large-scale outdoor installations.

The first comprehensive exhibition in Hong Kong dedicated to the pinnacle of Mughal art, featuring over 100 precious artefacts from the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK. The exhibition celebrates the extraordinary artistic achievements of the Golden Age of the Mughal Empire (ca. 1560–1660) of the three remarkable emperors: Akbar (r. 1556–1605), Jahangir (r. 1605–1627) and Shah Jahan (r. 1628–1658).

The PPA Tour Asia Hong Kong Open 2025 will take place at Kai Tak Arena, Kai Tak Sports Park on August 21–24 as one of the marquee events in the Asian circuit. The Impossible Trial – a musical, the first original Cantonese musical commissioned by WestK and co-presented and co-produced with HKREP, on its Mainland China tour in Shanghai and Beijing from 17 June, will return to the Xiqu Centre on 14 August for its third Hong Kong run. The 2025 Hong Kong rerun is supported by the China National Arts Fund. The Beijing stop of the tour is supported by the Office of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in Beijing.

Clockenflap, Hong Kong’s biggest international outdoor music and arts festival, takes place at the Central Harbourfront from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 December.

The early lineup includes acclaimed British singer-songwriter Jacob Collier and feted Hong Kong singer-songwriter Panther Chan on Friday; followed by Indonesian rap star Rich Brian and former Portishead frontwoman Beth Gibbons on Saturday; and Scottish indie legends Franz Ferdinand and Mandarin pop star Yoga Lin on Sunday.

The initial lineup announcement also features British singer-songwriter Passenger and German electro-house hellraisers Digitalism (DJ set) on Friday; US alt-indie favourite Soccer Mommy, Japanese indie-popsters Chilli Beans., Thai indie darling Phum Viphurit and Japanese uprising vocalist-songwriter AKASAKI on Saturday; and on Sunday, Canadian post-rock masters Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Californian indie heroes TV Girl, UK-based DJ Riria, and Hong Kong mythical post-punk legends, Bitter Tea of General Yeng, returning after a 40-year silence for their first-ever live performance.
