While Hong Kong holds many treasures, the northeast part of the New Territories can really call itself a hidden gem, given it can only be accessed by sea. The relatively remote islands, rural villages, geological attractions (part of Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark) and unspoilt coastlines are good places to appreciate the natural landscape, ecological habitats and rural lifestyle, which reflect very much the diversity and contrast that Hong Kong offers.
Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, which makes up most of this region, has the most comprehensive stratigraphy of sedimentary rocks in Hong Kong, ranging from 400-million-year-old Devonian sandstone to a conglomerate of 55-million-year-old tertiary siltstone. The area is also rich in landforms resulting from different erosional processes.
