Origins of the traditional farmhouses
Located in Kowloon City, the Stone Houses Family Garden is an architectural treasure that offers a glimpse into old Hong Kong. These traditional post-war Chinese farmhouses consist of five two-storey residential units that were once part of the now non-existent Hau Wong Temple New Village. Believed to have been built between 1945 and 1949, they are made of granite blocks covered by pitched roofs of timber rafters and clay tiles.
Revitalised as a community hub
Over the years, the area hosted residents from China, followed by several film studios, before numerous small-scale factories took over in the 1970s.
However, the village was cleared out in 2001 and, after extensive restoration efforts – and the declaration of Grade III historic building status in 2010 – it reopened in 2015 as the Stone Houses Family Garden and now play host to numerous businesses, including a nostalgic cafe and a museum that sheds light on the history of the surrounding area.
Today, the leafy terrace of the Stone House cafe has become a popular place for people in the neighbourhood to hang out.
