Blending heritage and hospitality
Stroll to the very edge of the charming fishing village of Tai O to discover the Tai O Heritage Hotel. Offering visitors a unique blend of historical allure and modern comfort, this boutique hotel is not just a place to stay; it is a piece of Hong Kong’s rich maritime history, beautifully restored for the modern traveller.
History of the hotel
Originally established as the Tai O Police Station, this building played a crucial role in maintaining order on Lantau Island and the surrounding waters. Built next to the Tai O Ferry Pier, it served as one of the earliest police depots on Hong Kong's outlying islands.
Conservation effort recognised internationally
The transformation of this historical site began in 2009, as it involved restoration of the building’s original features and its conversion into a nine-room boutique hotel, now known as the Tai O Heritage Hotel.
This effort was recognised in 2009 when the building was designated a Grade II historic building. Further accolades followed in 2013, with the hotel receiving a prestigious UNESCO award for cultural heritage conservation.
Experience a memorable stay
The architectural restoration has preserved the building’s late 19th century character, seamlessly integrating historical elements into the 21st century setting. Visitors can admire the cannons, searchlight, corner turrets, dry-goods store and cells that are distinctive to the former police station.
The hotel exudes classical elegance with features such as a Chinese tiled roof, wooden casement windows, granite steps, French windows, an arched facade, fireplaces and a connecting bridge between the main building and the outhouse.
Walk into the storied past
Today, the Tai O Heritage Hotel invites visitors to explore its storied halls from 11am to 6pm daily, providing an immersive experience into its rich history and stunning architecture.
Guests can also indulge in a meal at Tai O Lookout, which offers delicious local cuisine with a side of breathtaking views.
