Yummy halal food spots around favourite city locations

  • Written by Have Halal Will Travel

Many are concerned about whether it’s possible to find local halal food in Hong Kong. But you’ll be happy to know that the city is actually full of yummy halal food (including authentic local food), with much of it found near major attractions! These are just a few of our favourite spots in different areas.

Along Victoria Harbour and Kowloon City

Hong Kong’s breathtaking skyline is best witnessed at Victoria Harbour. After grabbing dinner at the yummy eateries nearby, head to the waterfront to witness the gorgeous lights and music of ‘A Symphony of Lights’ — a multimedia show that is recognised as one of the world’s most spectacular! If you’re looking for a different perspective of Hong Kong, be sure to take a spin on the Hong Kong Observation Wheel .

Hung’s Chinese Restaurant

Tucked in a corner of Chungking Mansions, Hung’s might blend in with the other halal restaurants in the building, but it’s the only one here, that we’re aware of, serving authentic Chinese cuisine. Chicken lovers will be excited to know that this small but comfortable restaurant is known for its roasted chicken. The crispiness of the skin is the perfect texture to balance with the soft and tender meat.

We recommend trying some of their other dishes too, especially the spicy black pepper beef and the fried rice!

Halal status: Muslim-owned
Address: G/F, Shop 14, Chungking Mansions, 36–44 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon

Happy Cow

The Happy Cow dessert kiosk serving vegan, halal-certified milkshakes and ice cream is conveniently located right next to the Observation Wheel. Choose from a wide variety of flavours — from Ying Yang Sesame (a signature local flavour) to Pina Colada (alcohol-free).

Happy Cow

Enjoy your ice cream on the lawn in front of the shop, as you take in the gorgeous view of Hong Kong around you — the perfect way to relax and unwind.

Address: Booth 3, Man Kwong Street, Hong Kong Observation Wheel, Central, Hong Kong Island

Islam Food

You might be planning to skip Islam Food as it’s not quite as accessible as other places, but it’s definitely worth the trip! In fact, it’s so popular that it opened another outlet nearby.

The veal goulash at Islam Food is served steaming hot and the stew in the patty — packed with tender, melt-in-your-mouth meat — oozes out when you cut into it. Be sure you also try their beef dumpling soup, curry mutton and the scallion pancake. The latter may look a bit like roti prata, but is packed with much more flavour and filling.

Halal status: only halal-certified ingredients and meat used
Address: G/F, No. 1 Lung Kong Road, Kowloon City, Kowloon / G/F, No. 33–35 Tak Ku Ling Road, Kowloon City, Kowloon

In Causeway Bay

Causeway Bay

Hong Kong’s major shopping district consists not only of popular international brands but also many halal food places, perfect for keeping your tummies full while you shop.

Wai Kee

A short 7-minute walk from Causeway Bay Station lies a renowned halal roast duck stall. Wai Kee might not be the only stall where you can find halal roast duck, but it’s known as one of the best in Hong Kong, period.

Wai Kee

And you’ll understand why once you sink your teeth into the tender duck meat. The flavour coupled with the golden brown, crispy skin is indescribable. But don’t just come here for the duck rice! The wonton noodles, soy chicken rice and signature mutton curry rice are firm favourites too.

Bowrington Road Cooked Food Centre

Halal status: Muslim-owned
Address:  Shop 5, Bowrington Road Cooked Food Centre, 1/F, Bowrington Road Market, 21 Bowrington Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong Island

Islamic Centre Canteen

Islamic Centre Canteen is a convenient 10-minute walk from MTR Causeway Bay Station and is quite easy to find, as it’s located in a mosque.

Islamic Centre Canteen

Choose from their range of steamed and fried dim sum. Our top picks for steamed would be the siu mai made with chicken, which is soft and succulent, as well as har gow (steamed shrimp dumplings). For the fried, we particularly recommend the deep-fried shrimp wonton.

If you’re coming here only for the dim sum, remember to do so before 3pm, as the dim sum menu is not available after!

If you’re in Causeway Bay close to dinner time, try Islamic Centre Canteen’s dinner menu. For a place known for their dim sum, we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how good their Cantonese main dishes are.

Halal status: Muslim-owned
Address: 5th floor, Osman Ramju Sadick, 40 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong Island

Aladin Mess

For authentic Indian food, Aladin Mess is the place to go. It’s located right next to Times Square and is a cosy spot amidst the hustle and bustle of Causeway Bay. Be sure to try the garlic naan with their brisket masala — the soft and tasty naan goes really well with the spiciness of the masala!

If you prefer seafood, try their clams masala and fish korma.

Ocean Park

Main Street Market

This might be Hong Kong’s oldest theme park but its age is only testament to how awesome it is! There’s so much to do and see that you’ll have to spend at least a full day here. And we know just what you need to fuel all that running around — food!

Panda Cafè Food to Go

Located at the Waterfront, this is a take-away kiosk offering a wide variety of food! Choose from their selection of meals or, if you prefer something lighter, opt for one of the small bites such as baus (buns) and hotdogs. Although it’s take away, you can sit and enjoy your meal in the cafeteria next door (not halal-certified).

Panda Food To Go

The Hainan chicken rice and beef ball steamed rice make a great lunch. The portions are huge and will definitely sustain you for the day.️ For a healthier option, choose their salad bowl.
