Jiangmen is known as the hometown of countless emigrants whose descendants can be found in over a hundred countries worldwide. The city is also home to cultural treasures such as the UNESCO World Heritage Kaiping Diaolou and Villages. Within the Xinhui district and four counties of Jiangmen, there are more than 3,000 diaolou (watchtowers).
Kaiping Diaolou and Villages was listed in the world cultural catalog in 2007. Nearly 2,000 diaolou towers stand amidst the fields, in perfect harmony with the splendid countryside. An incredible fusion of Chinese and Western cultures, UNESCO experts describe it as “a complex and flamboyant fusion of Chinese and Western structural and decorative forms”.
