Semi-staged opera: Cavalleria Rusticana & Pagliacci

Cavalleria Rusticana takes place on an Easter morning. Santuzza is anxiously looking for her lover Turridu, who cheated and returned to his former fiancée, Lola, who is married to Alfio. Santuzza tries in vain to win back Turridu. Mad with jealousy, she tells Alfio, the cuckolded husband, about Lola and Turridu. Alfio challenges him to a fight. After saying goodbye to his mother, Turridu leaves for his final battle.

Pagliacci is a story based on an actual late-19th century murder case, in which Canio is the head of an acting troupe and his wife Nedda is having an affair with a young man, Silvio. Fearing Canio’s anger, Nedda attempts to break it off. Tonio, one of the troupe members, is also in love with Nedda and confesses his love for her, but she turns him away. In an act of revenge, Tonio tells Canio that Nedda is having an affair. During a performance, Canio confronts Nedda, and stabs her. Now, we shall see how this real-life murder ends on stage.
