Hong Kong’s flourishing arts scene culminates each March with an inspirational spectrum of events, including the hotly anticipated Art Basel Hong Kong. From opera to ballet, art installations to seminars, there’s something to suit all tastes — whether you’re an art aficionado or an enthusiastic novice.
Arts Month in Hong Kong comprises of a wealth of events and exhibitions, from open studios to iconic displays, to world-renowned Art Basel and supporting South Island Art Day. Most events take place across the month of March, but you can check the specific exhibition dates on the featured sites below.
Art Basel’s celebrated Hong Kong exhibition enters its sixth year, featuring an incredible 242 premier galleries from 34 countries and territories, showcasing some of the best modern and contemporary art.
Art Basel in Hong Kong provides a portal to the region’s artists, with over half of the participating galleries hailing from the Asia-Pacific region.

Art Central is recognised for presenting progressive art that challenges the boundaries of contemporary style. The upcoming fair will showcase dynamic, young artists alongside established names. The show is committed to developing and fostering the local art scene and includes partnerships with local communities and schools.
Art Central will feature 102 international galleries with 30 new galleries featuring for the first time.
Fo Tan Open Studio
Fo Tan was the first art hub in Hong Kong and remains the largest to this day. The collection of artists includes painters, sculptors, potters and calligraphers. As part of Hong Kong Arts Month in 2018, their workshops were opened to to public, with some artists allowing visitors to view current productions of artwork in their own workshops and studios. Plans for the 2019 open studio will be confirmed closer to the event.
South Island Arts Day
The South Island Cultural District (SICD) galleries, art spaces and artist studios will open their doors as part of Art Basel and Art Central’s VIP programmes. SICD promises an exciting and varied showcase, giving visitors the opportunity to attend exhibition openings, interact with local and international artists, experience contemporary art, dance and music performances, as well as enjoy free food and drink.
