The raucous bars and clubs of Lan Kwai Fong often dominate any discussion of things to do come nightfall in Hong Kong, but there’s much more to the city’s nightlife scene than that. If you want to sip a drink and tap your feet to the rhythm of some live music, you’re in the right place. There’s a truly excellent selection of venues with regular live music nights that cater to all tastes. Here are our favourites.
1563 at the East
This huge, 6,000 square foot space opened in 2016 and was designed with live music in mind. No surprise then that it has quickly established itself as one of the coolest live venues in Hong Kong. The Wild Wild West event here every Wednesday evening runs the full gamut of folk, rock, jazz, funk, R&B, soul, Latin, reggae and everything in between, so there’s always something for everyone!

Dusk Till Dawn
The least “classy” venue on this list, if it’s a more gritty experience you seek, Dusk Till Dawn is for you. The excellent live cover band provides a down and dirty, party-fuelled music bonanza that’s great if you’re looking to cut loose and dance the night away without a care in the world.
76 Jaffe Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong Island. Nearest MTR station: Wan Chai, Exit A2. +852 2528 4689
This iconic building – a Victorian era monument – houses one of the most dynamic performance venues in the city, taking in countless live music performances. Expect everything from jazz, rock, blues and a whole lot more.
2 Lower Albert Road, Central, Hong Kong Island. Nearest MTR station: Central, Exit D1. +852 2521 7251
Smack dab in the middle of Lan Kwai Fong, Volar is one of Hong Kong’s most popular clubs, a cavernous place where the bouncers are firm and the crowd is consistently beautiful. Get past the doormen, and you’re treated to a place where dark aesthetics contrast against the many blue lights. Expect more mainstream tunes, including a heavy emphasis on house and techno, with the occasional hip-hop night.
B/F, Ho Lee Commercial Bldg, 38-44 D’Aguilar St, Central, +852 2810 1510
If you like guitar riffs paired with hardy bar food and reasonably priced drinks; The Wanch is the place to go. Proud to never charge for entry, the bar is a Mecca for aspiring local bands and musicians. Fans consistently turn out in droves for the regular events the establishment organises.
