Experimental Chinese Opera Series 2019

This year, the ‘Experimental Chinese Opera Series’ will be performed at the Xiqu Centre and present new and original works that transcend the traditional artistic boundaries of Chinese opera practises — offering fresh interpretations, shorter performance lengths and innovative narratives and presentation techniques. The programmes include the experimental Cantonese opera ‘Farewell My Concubine’ (New Adaptation), as well as the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe’s experimental Kunqu Opera ‘The Chairs’, adapted from Eugène Ionesco’s 1952 Theatre of the Absurd play ‘Les Chaises’. It continues the exploration of Chinese opera and artistic development.
