Bar Guide – Best Live Music and Dancing

The raucous bars and clubs of Lan Kwai Fong often dominate any discussion of things to do come nightfall in Hong Kong, but there’s much more to the city’s nightlife scene than that. If you want to sip a drink and tap your feet to the rhythm of some live music, you’re in the right place. There’s a truly excellent selection of venues with regular live music nights that cater to all tastes. Here are our favourites.

This huge, 6,000 square foot space opened in 2016 and was designed with live music in mind. No surprise then that it has quickly established itself as one of the coolest live venues in Hong Kong. The Wild Wild West event here every Wednesday evening runs the full gamut of folk, rock, jazz, funk, R&B, soul, Latin, reggae and everything in between, so there’s always something for everyone!

6/F, Hopewell Centre, 183 Queen’s Road Central, Wan Chai, Hong Kong Island. Nearest MTR station: Wan Chai, Exit A3. +852 323 2538

Dusk Till Dawn

The least “classy” venue on this list, if it’s a more gritty experience you seek, Dusk Till Dawn is for you. The excellent live cover band provides a down and dirty, party-fuelled music bonanza that’s great if you’re looking to cut loose and dance the night away without a care in the world.

76 Jaffe Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong Island. Nearest MTR station: Wan Chai, Exit A2. +852 2528 4689

Fringe Club

Volar

Smack dab in the middle of Lan Kwai Fong, Volar is one of Hong Kong’s most popular clubs, a cavernous place where the bouncers are firm and the crowd is consistently beautiful. Get past the doormen, and you’re treated to a place where dark aesthetics contrast against the many blue lights. Expect more mainstream tunes, including a heavy emphasis on house and techno, with the occasional hip-hop night.
