Dragon's Back Hike

mapWith beautiful coastal scenery and easy accessibility from the city, the Dragon’s Back is a popular escape that deservedly gets regular mentions in travel guidebooks. A short hop from the bustle of Hong Kong East, the trail provides stunning views of Shek O, Tai Long Wan, Stanley, Tai Tam, and the South China Sea.

Did you know?

The Dragon's Back is a path connecting Wan Cham Shan (226m) and Shek O Peak (284m), stretching vertically over D'Aguilar Peninsula. The path undulates between these hill tops, reminiscent of the shape of a dragon’s backbone.

Shek O Peak
Shek O Peak

‘Dragon’s Back’ refers to the path rolling along the ridges from Shek O Peak to Wan Cham Shan. At 284 metres high, the hilltop sightseeing platform on Shek O Peak is the perfect place to catch your breath while enjoying the panorama of Shek O, Tai Long Wan and even Tung Lung Island.

People come to a small mountain gap high up on the Dragon’s Back to fly kites or jump off into the great blue yonder with paragliding wings.

Pottinger Gap

Sitting between Mount Collinson and Pottinger Peak, Pottinger Gap is where several trails intersect and marks the start of Pottinger Peak Country Trail. Ramble under green shades and rest to your heart’s content at the pavilion overlooking the urban landscape of Chai Wan.

End Point — Tai Long Wan
Tai Long Wan

Another ‘Big Wave Bay’ on Hong Kong Island. In the summer, this allows hikers to conclude their trip with a dip. Waves reach several metres high in all seasons in the unobstructed bay, making it a surfer's haunt. You can also fuel up at nearby outdoor cafes.

There are no replenishing stations along the way, so stock up with food and water at supermarkets or convenience stores in Shau Kei Wan before starting out.

How to get there
To the starting point:
From MTR Shau Kei Wan Station Exit A, walk to the Shau Kei Wan Bus Terminus. Take bus 9 or the red minibus with the sign “Shek O” to the To Tei Wan stop on Shek O Road.

From the end point:
Take the red minibus with the sign “Shau Kei Wan” or a taxi from Big Wave Bay back to Shau Kei Wan.
