Peng Chau measures only about 1 sq km. During the 60s and 70s, this tiny island had hundreds of factories, including, somewhat unexpectedly, the largest match factory in Southeast Asia. The factories are long gone now, and life is much simpler and quieter.

A temple to a much-loved deity Seventh Sister Temple

Turn Left form the ferry terminal, and walk along Peng Lei Road until you see the site of the old match factory. You’ll see three temples, namely, Kwan Yum, Monkey King and Seventh Sister. On 7 July in the lunar calendar devotees of Seventh Sister celebrate the deity’s birthday and the temple is graced with girls from Peng Chau paying their respects.

The Peng Chau Family Trail is the main hiking trail on this tiny island. Walk along the trail and you will find the Old Fisherman’s Rock, which at close quarters is revealed to be the huge stone in the shape of a man fishing.

After passing Lung Mo Temple at Tung Wan, you can walk along Chi Yan Street to Wing On Street where you’ll find a number of restaurants. Alternatively, you can travel on to Sing Ka Road along Wing On Street and then set out for Nam Wan.

Tin Hau Temple

Story of a Tin Hau Temple

The Tin Hau Temple near Wing On Street was established during the reign of Jiaqing druing Qing Dynasty. Housed in the Temple is a whale skeleton about the height of two persons. It is said that the notorious Qing Dynasty pirate Cheung Po Tsai once intended to ransack Peng Chau but was prevented by the appearance of the goddess Tin Hau. There is a couplet displayed in the temple commemorating her appearance.

The Kam Fa Temple, near the Tin Hau Temple, is also more than 200 years old. During the reign of Qianlong (1762), it is said that a pharmacist built this temple to thank the Goddess Kam Fa for helping him find the right medicinal herbs that cured his wife of illness.
