Starting Point — Pak Tam Chung
Pak Tam Chung

The dense vegetation marks the entrance to Sai Kung East Country Park and the 100 km MacLehose Trail. Set off from the roundabout next to the Pak Tam Chung Holiday Camp — consider stocking up here at the tuck shop before venturing into East Dam.

High Island Reservoir East Dam
High Island Reservoir East Dam

Constructed in the 1970s, High Island Reservoir is an architectural wonder that blends in with the geological grandeur of nature. Stroll along the dam for panoramic views of the reservoir, rolling peaks and the peculiar dolosse cofferdam. This is also the gateway to the many geo-treasures of Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark.

Tips from Kelvin Yuen

Tips from Kelvin Yuen - High Island Reservoir East DamOn a windless sunny day, you can capture a perfect mirror image by placing the camera close to the lake at High Island Reservoir. The clear water reflects the anchor-shaped stone located across the lake.

To ensure the reflection is captured clearly, it is recommended to opt for fast shutter speed, such as 1/100s.

Hexagonal rock columns
Hexagonal rock columns

This huge wall of reddish hexagonal rock columns is only a fraction of an area of over 100 km2 of volcanic columns — a legacy of volcanic activities 400 million years ago. Further down you will see another magnificent cliff of S-shaped rock columns formed by earthquakes and regional subsidence that generated folding forces.

Sea cave

A wooden boardwalk that is part of the High Island Geo Trail leads you to the opening of a large sea cave. Learn about formation of the cave on the interpretation panels.

A sea stack that had broken away from the mother rock can be seen easily at East Dam.

Long Ke
Long Ke

Follow the sign for Long Ke Village near the pavilion and walk along the MacLehose Trail for 25 minutes. This descent gives you a bird’s-eye view of the gorgeous scenery of the cove of Long Ke — a quiet beach with emerald waters, smooth white sand and breaking waves that will delight any beach lover.
