Established over 130 years ago, The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong has a long history as a professional organisation for Cantonese opera performers in Guangdong province. In 1953, it became a registered association in Hong Kong. With the aim of developing the art of traditional Cantonese opera, it also promotes the professional development of its members and nurtures talented new performers.

The association drives the development of Cantonese Opera through educational efforts. It organises training classes in traditional performing arts for teenagers and cooperates closely with the Vocational Training Council in offering opera courses. The association also holds regular performances by established artists.

In July 2012, the association became the venue partner of Yau Ma Tei Theatre, a revitalised performing arts venue, with the main objective of nurturing new talent.
