Most hotels provide international direct dial services. Local calls from public telephones usually cost HK$1 for five minutes and calls can be paid by phone card or coins. Phone cards are available from retail stores of telephone companies and convenience stores. The cards usually have values of HK$50, and $100. Multilingual phone card instructions are usually posted on public telephones. For directory enquiries, call 1081 (English) or 1083 (Cantonese) / 1088 (Putonghua).

Almost everyone in Hong Kong has a mobile phone. Join the crowd by renting a mobile phone at the Hong Kong International Airport. If you own a mobile phone, you can buy pre-paid SIM cards with a local number and set amount of service minutes from retail stores of telephone companies and convenience stores. These cards are compatible with tri-band and dual-band phones. You might also have roaming service from your telephone service provider. Mobile phones using GSM 900, PCS 1800, CDMA and WCDMA can be used in Hong Kong.
