Chinese Assorted Cakes
To take home a true taste of Hong Kong, consider buying Chinese cakes and festive delicacies. Not usually made from flour and sugar, as Western cakes are, Chinese cakes come in a wide variety of not-too-sweet pastry dough, such as "wife cake" (flaky pastry with winter melon paste) , mini moon cakes (lotus-seed paste cake) , egg rolls (finely rolled pastry, not the deep fried rolls found in the West) , and almond cookies .

Chinese cakes are appropriate for just about any occasion including weddings (assorted cakes) and at festival time (moon cakes for Mid-Autumn Festival). The larger, holiday moon cakes traditionally have an eggyolk baked right inside for a rich treat.

Attractively packaged and hygienically sealed, assorted Chinese cakes can be found in specialty shops in Mong Kok, Tsim Sha Tsui, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and North Point or at major department and food stores.

Tips
