Clothing and accessories
It’s little wonder that few visitors pass through Hong Kong without first testing their luggage weight allowance. Hong Kong’s heritage of trade and its obsession with image have spawned an international fashion shopping destination like no other. Skyscraper malls and cubby-hole stalls, flagship stores and factory outlets, luxury chic and hip boutiques – even if your wardrobe doesn’t need an expansion, the sheer variety of clothes shopping here is a tempting sight to behold.
In Asia’s world city you can be measured for an affordable tweed three-piece suit, have a leather craftsman design your ideal luggage, rifle through a pile of factory surplus in a noisy street market, arrange a private viewing at a haute couture store, swish through a spacious mall of international high street and high-end brands, and rub elbows with fashion trendsetters at budget boutiques. And getting threads that are uniquely Hong Kong can mean anything from market-stall silk chinoiserie, to the world-renowned creations of local designers such as Vivienne Tam, William Tang, Walter Ma and Lu Lu Cheung.
Cosmetics, skin care and hair salons
Navigating Hong Kong’s beauty products aisles presents shoppers with an almost equal level of choice. Cosmetic and skincare shops abound, ranging from famous international brand names to emerging organic and herbal pioneers. The shopping experience is no less varied and just about every budget is catered to, with swanky department stores at one end of the scale and cluttered bargain shops at the other.
Most people get their locks snipped before a vacation, but when heading to a city that touts some of the favourite salons of Asia’s A-list, you might opt to wait and go home with a new style instead.
Look for something special, look around, or just come and look at other people forking out cash to look good. Shopping is a serious sport in Hong Kong. Come and join the team!
