Swire Maestro: Jaap's Mahler by Hong Kong Philharmonic
Known as the Titan Symphony, Mahler's First is his briefest but still "contains the whole world" - Mahler's aim for all his symphonies. In this work, first performed in 1889, distant birdsong gives way to triumphant brass fanfares; a lover's serenade becomes a dizzying dance; and 'Frère Jacques' becomes the funeral lament for a hunter, with all the forest animals paying their respects.
