Feng Shui by Hong Kong Dance Company
Shandong's rice-growing song, the yangge, epitomises the traditional folk dance culture of the Han Chinese. Its roots lie in rituals and prayers for fair weather, good harvest, peace and abundance. Feng Shui takes inspiration from the grand scale, elaborate patterns and rich physicality of the yangge. It also draws on concepts from the I Ching (¡¥Book of Changes¡¦), including feng shui, yin-yang and the interactions of the five elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth). Employing traditional yangge props such as umbrellas, drums, sticks and fans, and the associated body language and dance movements, this deeply Chinese performance traces past and present, heaven and earth in a continuum with man.
