The Sleeping Beauty by Hong Kong Ballet

The Hong Kong Ballet revives its sumptuous production of The Sleeping Beauty, staged by Cynthia Harvey (former Principal Dancer of American Ballet Theatre and The Royal Ballet), with magnificent sets and costumes by English designer Mark Bailey and music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. In a faraway kingdom long, long ago, the evil fairy Carabosse casts a spell on the realm’s beloved Princess Aurora, cursing her to die on her sixteenth birthday. The good Lilac Fairy comes to the rescue; she cannot undo the curse, but instead puts the Princess and the rest of the kingdom into a deep sleep. A hundred years later, Prince Désiré passes through the dark forest. The Lilac Fairy meets the prince and together they set out to break Carabosse’s wicked spell. The revival features a shortened version of the ballet that nonetheless retains all the key elements of this charming fairy tale.
