Victoria Prison Compound
Old Bailey Street, Central
Decommissioned and closed in December 2005, the compound is on the site of the original prison built in 1841 when Hong Kong became a British colony. It was one of the first Western buildings constructed of durable
materials in Hong Kong, but within 20 years the prison space
was so inadequate that prisoners had to be moved to an island in
the harbour and also to a prison ship. Once additional accommodation
was added, the prison reopened and remained in use, except for short periods during the 1930s and 1940s. (Not open
to the public.) |
