February 12 - New Year's Day

Tradition:
Local people greet one another with Kung Hei Fat Choi (Prosperous New Year) and hand out red Lai See packets containing money to children and unmarried adults. That evening families often enjoy a vegetarian dinner with dishes that signify good fortune for the year to come.

Suggested activities:
Visit the Tamar site, Central for the 2002 Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Parade. Attend Day 1 of the Carlsberg Cup international football tournament at the Hong Kong Stadium. Dine in a top-class hotel and then take in the lights on both sides of the harbour. Retire for a nightcap.
