Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok on the Lantau Island is truly an architectural wonder. Designed by acclaimed British architect Lord Norman Foster, this awesome state-of-the-art structure is one of the world's largest and most modern airports, making Hong Kong the gateway to Asia. The airport is connected to downtown Hong Kong via a dramatic chain of highways and bridges.
This remarkable airport project also has some interesting vital statistics. It is 1.27k from the entrance to the end of the Y-shaped concourse and it has a total area of 570,000 sq m.. It is nine times the size of the old Kai Tak Airport. It also has 74 moving walkways, 98 lifts and 70 escalators. The commercial area measures 39,000 sq m and has 200 premises of which of 40 are F&B outlets.
The total airport site measures 1,225 hectares and it has an annual passenger throughput of 45 million and is built to handle 87 million. It routinely handles 3 million tons of cargo a year but has the capacity to handle triple that, or 9 million tons. There are two runways each measuring 3,800m.. There is also a five-star hotel with 1,100 rooms adjacent to the airport.
Hong Kong International Airport was voted one of the Top 10 construction achievements of the 20th century by an influential group of US construction executives and editors in 1999. The Top 10 were chosen out of more than 120 projects. |
