Kaiping is famous for its fortified castle-like dwellings (known as Diaolou) built by home-coming overseas Chinese who had made a fortune in western countries. The unique architectural style of western and eastern tradition Diaolou are jewels in the open fields. The history of Diaolou could be dated back to the Ming Dynasty and boomed in the early 19th and 20th century. In June 2007, Kaiping Diaolou and Villages were announced among the World Heritage List by UNESCO. The well-preserved Diaolou clusters can be found in Zili Village and Majianglong Village.
Diaolou
Besides Diaolou, the Chikan old town is the historic centre established for over 350 years, it retains much of her charm as a flourished market town during the 17th – 18th century. The Tanjiang River, fishing boats and the western style buildings made up picturesque scenery for this ancient town. Another beautiful landmark is “Li Garden” – a beautiful castle-like mansion built by a home-coming overseas Chinese. The mansion sets by the river and sits in the centre of a traditional Chinese garden.
