Ko Shan Theatre and New Wing Ko Shan Theatre and New Wing

Opened in 1983, Ko Shan Theatre is a popular venue for Cantonese opera performances. The Ko Shan Theatre New Wing, which was opened in October 2014, comprises a 600-seat auditorium, an exhibition gallery and an array of rehearsal facilities, making it an excellent venue to showcase the cultural richness of Cantonese opera.

The venue has won numerous design awards. Lending a modern interpretation to classical Chinese architecture and following the concept of ‘a theatre in a park, a park in a theatre’, the glass window walls and external sun-shading wooden screens, the white stone walls and the curved foyer intertwine spectacularly with the view of the outdoor scenery.

Moreover, the five-storey building is optimised for the staging of Cantonese opera with ample space for scenery and props, dressing rooms located on the same floor as the stage, and high-ceiling rehearsal rooms enabling performers to practise throwing acts.

Even if you don’t have time for a performance, you can drop by the Cantonese Opera Education and Information Centre — a state-of-the-art repository that merges tradition with technology to offer hands-on experience in elements of Cantonese opera and in-depth knowledge of the art. Be sure to also check out the gift shop in the lobby, and take a stroll in the spectacular rooftop garden, which has a central lawn and a green trail.
